How to Handle Loads Safely

When the forklift is in operation, do not raise or lower the forks. Loads must not extend over the backrest. This is due to the danger of the load sliding back in the direction of the operator. Check for overhead obstructions and ensure there is adequate clearance before raising a load. Stay away from overhead power lines. Once the load is lifted straight up, tilt it back slightly.

While the load is raised the lift truck would be less stable. Make certain that no pedestrians cross under the elevated fork. The operator should never leave the forklift when the load is raised.

The forks must be level when handling pallets, and high enough to extend all the way into and under the load. The fork's width must provide even weight distribution.

Chock the wheels and set the brakes prior to unloading and loading the truck. The floors must be strong enough to support the weight of both the load and the forklift. Fixed jacks can be installed in order to support a semi-trailer that is not coupled to a tractor. The entrance door height must clear the height of the forklift by a minimum of 5 cm. Mark edges of ramps, docks or rail cars and avoid them.

If there is not proper ventilation into the forklift, do not stay in there for extended periods. The interior of the truck must have enough lighting and be free of obstructions. Inspect the forklift cab's flooring for holes. The installation of nonslip material on the floor would help avoid slipping. Clear whatever obstacles from dockplates and docks and make certain surfaces are not wet or oily.

Never tow or push other vehicles with a lift truck.
